Ministry of Information Establishes Committee for Nigeria's Values Charter

In a significant move toward national citizen reorientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has formed a committee to finalize Nigeria's Values Charter.
The Values Charter serves as a social contract, defining the national value system and encapsulating the essence of being Nigerian. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to unveil this comprehensive policy, including the Nigerian Promise and Citizen Codes, each with seven pillars, in early 2024.
With a focus on integration into formal, informal, and vocational education policies, the government aims to instill shared aspirations, nationalism, and pride among citizens. This initiative addresses the absence of a definitive core value system, recognizing Nigeria's diverse ethnic and cultural landscape despite constitutional provisions on national values.
Chaired by Dr. Muhammed Auwal Haruna, the committee, featuring prominent members like Dr. Biodun Adeniyi and Dr. Otive Igbuzor, has a two-week timeline to submit its report. Mrs. Theresa Nnalue, the Director of Orientation and Behavioural Modification (OBM) at the National Orientation Agency (NOA), will oversee the committee's coordination efforts.
